A No. 8 steel rebar is tested in tension. By monitoring the load reading of the testing machine, it was found that the specimen yielded at a load of 40,000 lb and that the proportional limit occurs at 90% of the yield stress. Elastic modulus of the material is 30x10^6 psi. a) Determine the tensile stresses at yield. (Blank #1) b) The increase in length that would occur at 70% of the yield stress in a 2-in gauge length is 2.377x10^-3 in. If the specimen is subjected to a load that causes a change in length of 1.0x10^-3 in, what is the final deformation after the specimen is unloaded? (Blank #2)

The strength capability of a composite material is normally distributed with the mean of μ₄ and standard deviation of σ₄ = 50 ksi. The stress imposed on the material is normally distributed with the mean of μs = 2000 ksi and standard deviation of σs = 100 ksi. It is desired to design a part such that the probability that the applied stress does not exceed the strength capability of the material is 0.99. What safety factor μ₄ / μs should be used in the design to achieve the desired structural integrity ? [Hint: if the applied stress is S and material strength is Y, then it is desired to find such a value of μ₄ for which P(Y - S > 0) = 0.99. Recall that if S and Y are independent and both normally distributed, then variable X = Y - S is also normal]
