Scenario: A group of employees expressed a desire to lose weight as part of a research study. All participants were given a body scan and were told the number of calories they should aim for per day to lose weight. They also all completed the Intrinsic Motivation Scale and were classified into one of two groups: high or low motivation. Participants were then randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) no prescribed change where participants can monitor their own calories; 2) given an eating plan created by a dietician; or 3) given an app to log all foods so that they can choose their own combinations to not exceed their target calories per day. After 8 weeks, the amount of weight lost was recorded (in pounds). The researcher wanted to see if the amount of weight lost differed by group type or motivation.
