So let's look at recall first.

Recall is when we must retrieve a memory without any external cues.

An example of this would be writing an essay or a short response.

In those instances, we don't have any information to help jog our memories.

We have to produce the information all by ourselves.

On the other hand, recognition is when we retrieve information based on the presence of cues.

So we do have external cues to help us remember in these instances.

An example of this would be a multiple choice test.

So on multiple choice tests, we have different options, and that usually helps us narrow down the answers.

It's possible that when we see the correct answer in our options, it will help us remember the information and help us to choose the correct answer...
