A crime victims’ ombudsman interacts with crime victims and organizations to ensure the respectful treatment of victims. Ombuds handle complaints and resolve conflicts using mediation to advocate for victims’ rights. An understanding of psychology is necessary to be able to negotiate effectively with all parties involved. In your opinion, which of the listed rights within the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (18 U.S.C. §3771) page on the Offices of the United States Attorneys section of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) website do you think is most important? Why? A recent victim of crime will likely be traumatized as a result of the event. Responders must use trauma-informed practices to engage victims successfully. If you were providing support to a victim of crime, how would you explain their rights? How would you explain the processes they may be facing throughout the criminal proceedings? What considerations should you make in the way that you communicate with victims of different crimes about what will be expected of them?
