Water is pumped from a large reservoir to a storage tank 30m above via a constant diameter pipe. The volumetric flow rate during pumping is 55 L/s. This is found to require 25kW of electrical power input to the motor driving the pump. The top of the storage tank is open to the atmosphere. The water density, ?=1000kg/m³, and the absolute viscosity, ?=1mPa.s. Determine: a) The overall efficiency of the pump-motor unit if all frictional losses in the pipes are neglected. b) The pressure difference between the inlet and the exit of the pump for the same case as part a). c) Frictional losses in the pipe are found to be significant. If the length of pipe between the pump and the storage tank is 130m, the pipe diameter is 20cm, and the surface roughness is 0.4mm, determine a more accurate estimate for the overall efficiency of the pump-motor unit. Minor losses can be neglected.

A pump is being used to transport a liquid food product (density p=1000 kg/m^3, viscosity 0.001 Pa s) from a holding tank to fill a machine at a mass flow rate of 2 kg/s. The liquid level in the holding tank is 10 m above the pump, and the filling machine is 5 m above the pump. There is 100 m of 2-inch nominal diameter sanitary pipe between the holding tank and the filling machine, with one open globe valve and four regular 90° flanged elbows in the system. Within the system, there is a heat exchange which causes a 100 kPa pressure drop due to friction. The holding tank is open to the atmosphere, and the filling machine is running at a pressure of 1.5 atm. The diameter of the filling machine pipe is 3 cm. A: What is the volume flow rate of the system? B: What is the diameter of the pipe? C: What is the average velocity inside the pipe? D: What is the Reynolds number of the flow in the pipe? E: What is the flow type?
