We are the makers of CoCo Cereals. Consumer reports has just published an article that shows that we frequently have less than 16 ounces of cereal in a box. Let’s assume that the government says that we must be within ± 5 percent of the weight advertised on the box. We go out and buy 2,000 boxes of cereal and find that they weigh an average of 15.875 ounces with a standard deviation of .529 ounces. What is the DPMO? What percentage of boxes are outside the tolerance limits? Is the claim true that we are underfilling? What SHOULD we do?

By law, a box of cereal labeled as containing 20 ounces must contain at least 20 ounces of cereal. The machine filling the boxes produces a distribution of fill weights with a mean equal to the setting on the machine and with a standard deviation equal to 0.04 ounce. To ensure that most of the boxes contain at least 20 ounces, the machine is set so that the mean fill per box is 20.12 ounces. Assuming nothing is known about the shape of the distribution, what can be said about the proportion of cereal boxes that contain less than 20 ounces. A) The proportion is at most 11%. B) The proportion is at most 5.5%. C) The proportion is at least 89%. D) The proportion is less than 2.5%.

The Fleet Food Products Company uses a machine to fill cereal boxes with 18.5 ounces. The net amount of cereal in all the boxes is normally distributed with an average of 18.5 ounces and a standard deviation of .35 ounces. A. What percent of the boxes contain more than 17.5 ounces of cereal? B. Find the probability that selecting a box of random cereal it contains less than 18.0 ounces of cereal. C. What is the probability that a randomly selected box will contain 16.8 to 19.3 ounces of cereal? D. Answer in a complete sentence what the result of part a means.

A government agency received many consumers' complaints that boxes of cereal sold by a company contain less than the advertised weight of 20 oz of cereal with a standard deviation of 5 oz. To check the consumers' complaints, the agency bought 36 boxes of the cereal and found that the average weight of cereal was 18 oz. If the amount of cereal in the boxes is normally distributed, test the consumers' complaint at the 0.05 level of significance.
