Describe the physiological effects and mode of action of alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana. (pages 295-98)
Psychoactive drugs have their action at, or near, the synapse (referred to as "sites of action" in the textbook). Describe the four possible mechanisms by which these drugs can have their effects. In your response, include definitions of agonists and antagonists, and for each of the four mechanisms, provide an appropriate example, indicating what the drug does to the neuron or in the synapse (i.e., its mechanism of action), and whether your example is that of an agonist or antagonist.
