The body is an intriguing thing and the more I learn about it, is the more I am in awe. Of all the diseases and disorders that we have gone through, I am most interested in Asthma. Asthma is a respiratory disorder characterized by recurring episodes of paroxysmal dyspnea which is the intermittent spasms of shortness of breath. Wheezing on expiration, inspiration or both caused by constriction of bronchi, coughing and thick bronchial secretions of mucus. World Health Organization (WHO) defines asthma as a chronic lung disease affecting people of all ages. It is cause by inflammation and muscle tightening around the airways which makes it harder to breathe. The symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Understanding this disorder given you an idea as to what someone is feeling if they are having an asthma attack. As a PSW this is important to know about this as it helps you to better be able to help your client. Once you know that your client is asthmatic you can identify and minimize contact with things that can cause the client’s asthma to act up. You would know what happens during an asthma attack and be able to have an idea of the discomfort the client could be going through. Also, knowing the signs and symptoms of asthma is very important for a personal support worker. If you have a client who is going through an asthma attack you would be able to recognize the signs when it is getting worse. It is very important to be knowledgeable about your client in order to give the best care. 1. Additional website on their concept? 2. Other reason why this is important? 3. What did you learn from their post?
