How are primary sexual characteristics different from secondary sexual characteristics?

Secondary sex characteristics are physical and behavioral characteristics that appear during puberty and are not directly related to reproduction. Secondary sex characteristics in males include deepening voice, more facial hair, larger muscle mass, and increased aggressiveness. Unlike these traits, sperm production is a primary sex characteristic in males because it is directly involved in reproduction. Other changes during puberty include increased calcium metabolism, increased water retention, and the production of androgens, estrogens, and progesterone.
