What are the fundamental differences between a synchronous motor and an induction motor in terms of operation and applications?
Added by David R.
Step 1
- Synchronous motors operate at a constant speed, known as synchronous speed, which is determined by the frequency of the power supply and the number of poles in the motor. They require a DC excitation current to the rotor to create a magnetic field that aligns Show more…

Mention and explain one difference that differentiates between synchronous motors, 1-phase induction, and 3-phase induction!

Explain how a synchronous motor differs from an induction motor with regards to its excitation and the power factor at which it operates.

Part 1: Evaluation of Synchronous Machine Synchronous motor applications are required where precise speed or position control is needed. It is more suited for constant torque and constant speed drives. Unlike 3-phase induction motors, synchronous motors can be designed for the required torque, power factor, and starting VA requirement to suit a particular need. In this assignment, students are required to choose any one of the applications stated below and produce a technical report based on the selected application. Applications of Synchronous Motor: 1. Steel mills 2. Metal rolling mills 3. Rock mining mills 4. Ore crushers Mining Mills Questions: 1. Select any one application as mentioned above. 2. Write the introduction based on the selected application. 3. With the help of suitable illustrations, explain briefly the construction and working operation of the synchronous motor. 4. Provide various sketches, drawings, or pictures and various data (voltage, current, and power details) about the selected application with appropriate explanation. 5. Evaluate why the synchronous motor is the most suitable type of motor for the selected application compared to other types of motors. Justify your answer with appropriate explanation. 6. Identify and explain the starting methods and speed control techniques for the selected application with the relevant sketches/drawings. 7. Write the conclusion. 8. References.
