What does the video mean by “the intersection of incarceration and child welfare”?
So there's roughly 3.6 million parents who are currently under correctional supervision. That could be parole, probation, and that could also just include incarceration. Those is about roughly 1.1 million parents who are actually incarcerated in either local, state, or federal facilities. It's estimated that an average of 10 million youth have had a parent incarcerated over the course of their lifetime. When it comes to child welfare, in particularly, we see an average of 8% of the youth who are removed from their households as a result of incarceration of their parents.
