The Civil War resulted in the abolition of slavery. It did not, however, settle the question of the status of newly free African Americans in the post-war South. While southern blacks wanted, and expected, the help of the federal government as they built their new lives, they did not look to the government to dictate their goals and priorities. Describe the goals and priorities of southern blacks in the decade following the Civil War. What did they think was required to transform the legal fact of emancipation into the reality of freedom? What kinds of lives did they want to live? What steps did they take to achieve their goals?
