An 79 year old lady with long standing history of dementia has been brought to Accident and Emergency following a fall and requires surgery to repair a fractured hip but has refused consent for same. You should discuss with her what the treatment involves, its benefits, risks, and any alternatives to any proposed treatment to assess her capacity to consent and ensure she understand the risks, benefits, wait and see if she makes an unwise decision, you can conclude that she lacks capacity, assume she does not have the capacity to provide consent due to her Dementia.
