Why are most items made of iron attracted to a magnet, but are not magnetic themselves? The electrons in iron atoms are paired, and cancel each other. Every atom of iron is a magnet, but they are usually randomly oriented and cancel each other. Iron needs to have other elements, such as cobalt or neodymium, added to become magnetic.
