00:01
Okay, so this is a question all about resonance.
00:03
And the first thing you have to do is define resonance.
00:05
And simply put, resonance is a phenomenon where you have a structure.
00:10
Let's say we have a bridge.
00:14
And you apply a force, a cyclic force, to that structure.
00:18
So imagine the wind is blowing over the bridge, it's buffeting, and the strength of the wind over time is a sine wave, something like this.
00:26
Now, if the frequency of that cyclic force is close to the natural frequency of the bridge, then the displacement or the amount of distance that the bridge moves due to the force is greatly increased because the frequency of the applied force is very close to the frequency, the natural frequency of the object.
00:46
So every object is a natural frequency, and if you apply a cyclic force with a frequency close to that natural frequency, you end up with increased displacement.
00:53
So that's effectively a brief definition of resonance.
00:56
So then you're asked to provide three examples where resonance is what we designed to accomplish.
01:01
And the first example of, you know, where resonance is the goal, we'll say resonance is good, is a tuning fork.
01:13
So a tuning fork is usually a metal device with two tongs, and it's designed to have a particular natural frequency.
01:20
So that if you play a musical notes or there's a certain tone, it will vibrate at that tone.
01:25
So normally you have a set of tuning forks all label with different frequencies, and it allows you to identify unknown tones.
01:31
So the first example, resonance is good, is going to be a tune.
01:33
For.
01:34
The second example is going to be just any musical instrument.
01:38
So it doesn't matter if it's a string instrument or if it's a wind instrument.
01:43
The instrument is designed to at the natural frequency or multiple as the natural frequency to resonate, to produce a louder, clearer tone than at frequencies in between the designated notes.
01:55
The second example is going to be a musical instrument.
01:58
And a final example of when resonance is good or we're designing for resonance is going to be a radio...
