What is the current concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, expressed as a percent and in ppm?
Added by Lauren B.
Step 1
A typical current value in recent years is about 420 ppm (parts per million). If you need the exact up-to-the-minute value, check NOAA or the Scripps CO2 program. Show more…

CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere are stable around 408 ppm (parts per million), which translates to approximately 1016 molecules cm-3 . What is the mass concentration of CO2 in units of μg m-3 ? Given the annual rate of increase of CO2 of 1.6 ppm yr-1 , what is the projected CO2 concentration in 2100 in units of ‘ppm’ and ‘μg m-3 ’? Hint: Assume an air density of 2.4×1019 molecules cm-3

What is the concentration in (a) ppmv and (b) percent by volume of carbon monoxide (CO) with a concentration of 103 μg/m³? Assume a temperature of 25°C and a pressure of 1 atm.

The current concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 402 ppmv. It was indicated in the text that the annual anthropogenic additions to the atmosphere are about 8 Gt (as C) of which about 4 Gt are removed into oceans and the terrestrial environment. Use these numbers to estimate the yearly net increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide mixing ratio ppmv.
