Below are 3 fictitious examples of operant (instrumental) conditioning. Analyze each example carefully (e.g., identify the stimuli and responses involved, and any additional phenomena that can occur with operant conditioning such as shaping, extinction, spontaneous recovery, stimulus discrimination and generalization, classical conditioning processes, primary reinforcers, secondary reinforcers, etc.). 8. When our dog, Basher, was a puppy, we used to feed him frequently, and he would take a bit of food from us quietly. My brother, however, used to tease Basher and hold the food just out of his reach. Basher would jump up on my brother and yelp to get the food. It wasn't long before Basher was "asking" for food. He would ask by jumping up at you and yelping. We all thought this was cute and as soon as Basher asked in this way we would give him a bit of food. Basher soon grew from a small puppy to a rather large dog. Often the family member who was asked for food didn't feel like going to get it right then, and this meant Basher would jump up and yelp a number of times before the person was finally irritated enough to give in and go to get him a bit of food. The family soon got tired of Basher's behaviour, not to say scratched and bruised by it. So at a family conference we decided not to give him any food when he jumped and yelped. For a while Basher continued asking for food and his jumping and yelping got quite intense, but gradually he started asking less and less, until weeks went by without him asking. However, then we went on holiday and for no reason, after we got back, Basher started asking for food. But it wasn't long before he stopped again.
