Which is the phase of Venus when it is closest? Which when furthest? How do you know?

Step 1
This is because it is on the same side of the Sun as Earth, and the sunlight is illuminating the side of Venus facing us. ** Show more…

Describe the process by which Venus became non-habitable. (3 marks)

Venus orbits the Sun on a path interior to the Earth's orbit. As a result, the position of Venus relative to both the Earth and the Sun causes Venus to have phases, similar to those of the Moon. Mercury also has phases. Relative to Earth's position, where on Venus' orbit would we expect to see the crescent phase? (Draw a picture if it helps.) - When Venus is on the far side of the Sun from the Earth, but not directly opposite (Earth-Sun-Venus angle between 90-180 degrees). - When Venus is directly between the Earth and the Sun. - When Venus is on the near side of the Sun as the Earth, but not directly between (Earth-Sun-Venus angle between 0-90 degrees). - When Venus is on the opposite side of the Sun from the Earth.

Distance from Venus to the Sun The elongation $\alpha$ of a planet is the angle formed by the planet, earth, and sun (see the figure). When Venus achieves its maximum elongation of $46.3^{\circ},$ the earth, Venus, and the sun form a triangle with a right angle at Venus. Find the distance between Venus and the sun in astronomical units (AU). (By definition the distance between the earth and the sun is $1 \mathrm{AU}$.)
