Which of the following is an advantage of person-administered survey methods? Interviews can help ensure respondents are screened to represent the target population. A statistician is hired by the National Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) to conduct a survey on pet expenditures. The statistician considers a personal interview. Which of the following are characteristics of personal interviews? Check all that apply. - Result in more incorrect responses resulting from misunderstood questions - May be expensive and time-consuming - May result in fewer incorrect responses resulting from misunderstood questions - Have a higher expected response rate than self-administered surveys and telephone interviews The statistician also considers a telephone interview. A telephone interview is usually less expensive than a personal interview. A disadvantage to this survey method is that it's less personal and thus has a lower expected response rate. The statistician also considers a self-administered survey. Which of the following are characteristics of self-administered surveys? Check all that apply. - May have a high expected response rate - May have a low expected response rate - Are inexpensive to conduct and are therefore attractive when the number of people to be surveyed is large - Are expensive to conduct and are therefore attractive when the number of people to be surveyed is large The NVMA has a small budget for data collection. After considering her data collection budget, the statistician decides to conduct either telephone interviews or self-administered surveys.

In-person interviews have for many years been the "gold standard" in survey research because the presence of an interviewer increases the response rate allows for better rapport with the interviewee, facilitates clarification of questions and instructions, and provides feedback about the interviewer's situation. However, researchers who design in-person interviewing projects are now making increasing use of technology to ensure consistent questioning of respondents and to provide greater privacy while answering questions. But having a respondent answer questions on a laptop while the interviewer waits is a very different social process than asking the questions verbally. Which approach would you favor in survey research? What tradeoffs can you suggest there might be in terms of quality of information collected, rapport building, and interviewee satisfaction?
