Which of the following statements concerning weight loss is correct? A low carbohydrate diet is the best way to lose weight because the body will then burn fat for energy. None of these statements is correct. A serving of fat or carbohydrate rated the same as having the same calorie content will not have the same effect in terns of weight gain. The body uses up more calories to digest protein than fats or carbohydrates; therefore a high protein diet is the best way to lose weight. It is much more important to cut down on fats and proteins in a diet than carbohydrates even if calorie values are similar. The most efficient dietary program is one that produces ketosis through a zero carbohydrate diet.

A weight-loss diet claims that it causes weight loss by eliminating carbohydrates (breads and starches) from the diet. To test this claim, researchers randomly assign overweight subjects to two groups. Both groups eat the same amount of calories, but one group eats almost no carbs, and the other group includes carbs in their meals. After 2 months, the researchers test the claim that the no-carb diet is better than the usual diet. They record the proportion of each group that lost more than $5 \%$ of their initial weight. They then announce that they failed to reject the null hypothesis. Which of the following are valid interpretations of the researchers' findings? a. There were no significant differences in effectiveness between the no-carb diet and the carb diet. b. The no-carb diet and the carb diet were equally effective. c. The researchers did not see enough evidence to conclude that the no-carb diet was more effective. d. The no-carb diet was less effective than the carb diet.
Some diets recommend reduced intake of carbohydrates to lose fat. Note that these diets are not necessarily supported as healthy by nutritional science, however they can be successful in reducing a person's fat levels. Explain how increasing carbohydrate intake can lead to increased fat content in the body, with reference to specific reactions in cellular respiration.
