Okay, so in this question, we're going to be looking at four different theories of emotion.
00:09
The james lands theory that cannot barred theory, cognitive mediation, i'll figure and the two factor theory.
00:16
So in order to understand why someone would feel more sexual attraction to their partner in a concert opposed to in a library, we will quickly take a look at each one of these theories.
00:32
So let's start off with the james lynch theory.
00:34
So, this theory was proposed by psychologist william james and carl blanche around the year 1884.
00:43
Yeah.
00:44
And this theory said the that emotion comes from the body.
00:54
And they explain this using a term called physiological arousal.
01:08
And this just basically means like the physical response.
01:15
So they mentioned that it's this physical response that actually proceeds emotion.
01:26
So the physical response comes first.
01:33
And they also said that it does not only come first, but it also causes the emotion.
01:41
So let's take a deeper look looking at an example.
01:46
So let's say that you are in a field or in the backyard and you spot what seems to be a snake and you assume that the snake is venomous that it's dangerous and your poems start to get sweaty.
02:02
You have a higher heart rate, your breath starts to quicken.
02:06
Maybe you start shaking according to the james lands theory.
02:09
It's all of these um responses that cause you to experience emotions.
02:17
So let's say fear.
02:19
So using our example, we can say that according to the james like theory, something like a high heart rate is what causes fear and being.
02:39
That this is the first of the four theories to come about.
02:43
It did face a lot of criticism.
02:46
And the main person who did criticize this theory is a man by the name of walter cannon, which brings us to our next theory that cannot barred theory of emotions.
02:59
And they simply said that rather than the body motions actually come from the brain.
03:06
But before we talk about that, let's talk about why walter cannon disagreed with james lands theory.
03:12
So he criticized the theory because he believed that in order for the james lands theory to be true, then there would have to be a specific response for each unique emotion.
03:26
So for fear, you would have to see like high heart rate and for happiness.
03:32
They would have to be something else and just looking at a person and looking at their physical responses.
03:38
We would be able to see which emotion that they were experiencing, but we know that this isn't true because high heart rate is not only for someone who is experiencing fear.
03:52
Someone who is happy, excited or even angry can also experience a high heart rate.
03:57
So that's why i can on disagreed and criticized the james lynch theory.
04:13
So now let's talk about his theory with um mm phillips bart.
04:19
So they believed that the brain caused us to feel both bodily responses and emotions.
04:27
And they believe that these happened at the same time.
04:31
So the physiological arousal they were talking about before any emotion happened at the same time, an emotion occur at the same time.
05:06
They did not only believe that they happened at the same time, but they also believe that they happened separately.
05:12
So it didn't have the causation relationship that the james lansbury proposed.
05:18
They believe that the brain caused you to fuel like sweaty palms and a high heart rate.
05:25
And it costs you should feel the emotion of fear separately at the same time.
05:30
So in our example of the snake, when you see that snake, you feel both of those things, you feel the fear and you start to feel like these physical responses at the same time, but they don't cause one another.
05:43
That's basically what cameron bar fears about.
05:47
Now let's move on to the cognitive mediation all theory.
05:52
So the cognitive mediation all theory was proposed by a man named richard lazarus and this was around 1995 and this theory, unlike the other two talked about cognition.
06:12
So the first one talked about body, the second one, ben talked about the brain and now we're looking at something called cognition...
