When working in the microbiology lab on campus, we will have specific instructions for how to dispose of equipment that is used to work with bacteria. When you are working at home, what will you do with loops, swabs, spreaders, etc. that have been used to transfer bacterial cultures? You will submerge them in pure bleach to kill all organisms present before disposing of these tools. You will store used equipment in a sealed plastic bag and bring it to the lab for proper disposal. You will wash them thoroughly with soap and water before disposing. You will use an acidic solution (such as vinegar) to disinfect all tools used to transfer bacteria before disposing of them.
