The following is a series of experiments, for each one decide what the most appropriate method of analyzing their data is and justify your answer. 1. You’re testing the impacts of commuting on stress. You recruit undergraduate psychology majors and determine whether they have to commute to campus or they live there. You also think that the season may affect them so you have them answer questions in January and in May. You compare these variables to their perceived stress scores, determined by a questionnaire. 2. You’re reading about a study of non-human primates in the wild measuring cooperation. The authors claim that cooperation is a learned trait among these primates, and so they use an observational measurement to determine the cooperation of the children and then four years later they come back to measure the cooperation of the same primates as adolescents. 3. You’re reading about the risk factors of heart disease among people who have recently had a depressive episode. The study uses a continuous score to measure the participants current depressive symptoms and a doctor screens their health charts (with the participants’ permission) to compute a continuous composite score of their risk for heart disease.

A researcher wishes to study the effect of cognitive behavior therapy on young people diagnosed with depression. Would you recommend using a z test, a t-test, or an ANOVA for the analysis? Explain your answer. What would your choice of the test depend on? For the test, you select, explain your design and your comparison groups. Would the hypothesis be directional or nondirectional? Would the test be one or two-tailed? How would the null and alternative hypotheses be worded?

A clinical psychologist is interested in evaluating the effectiveness of the following three techniques for treating mild depression: cognitive restructuring, assertiveness training, and an exercise/nutrition program. Undergraduate students suffering from mild depression are randomly sampled from the university counseling center. Forty students are randomly assigned to one of the four techniques (placebo, cognitive restructuring, assertiveness training, exercise/nutrition program). Treatment is conducted for 10 weeks, after which depression is measured using the Beck Depression Scale. The post-treatment depression scores are given here. (Higher scores indicate greater depression.) ANOVA Questions 1. What was the ANOVA used for? 2. What did you find? 3. What is the ANOVA evidence supporting your inference? 4. What is the effect size? Post Hoc tests: 5. What did you use the t tests to compare? 6. What did you find? Or, what inference(s) do the comparisons allow you to make? In other words, what differences were found between/among the groups, if any. 7. What is the t-test evidence supporting each inference?
