1. Why are the units of a measurement just as important as the number?
2. What does the use of significant figures in reporting measurements tell us about measurement? Why is it necessary to use the correct number of significant figures in reporting the results of calculations involving measured values?
3. A certain measurement resulted in a value of 0.0000052 meters. State a simpler way of representing this measurement. Why are prefixes such as these used in science?
4. If you were to buy a watermelon, would its mass be best expressed in mg, g, kg, or Mg? why? Do the same thing for a bumblebee. Is your personal mass best expressed in kg, grams, or mg? Is the volume of a typical drinking glass best expressed in kL, liters, or mL? Is the length of a football field best expressed in kilometers, meters, or millimeters? Respond to "Why?" for all of these.
5. We developed certain procedures (or rules) in some of our activities to represent approaches to determining values for measured properties. For example, you developed methods for measuring mass and volume. Yet, if you looked up standard definitions for terms such as mass or volume, you would come up with a very different description (such as volume: the amount of space an object occupies). Why are the approaches we used much more helpful in a scientific context than dictionary definitions?
6. What evidence can you provide that says the paper you made in class is a mixture?
7. List 3 things you might find around your house that you can clearly identify as a mixture, and tell why you think so for each. List 3 other items that it is difficult to tell if it is a mixture or not, and tell why this is hard for each. Finally, classify the following as either a pure substance, a homogeneous mixture, or a heterogeneous mixture, and provide reasoning for your answer: Blood, raisin bran, steel, copper wire, a pencil, dirt, glass, air, coal, a supreme pizza, salt water, sugar cookie, chocolate sauce, and calcium.
8. Describe the main point of reading the selection from Measuring America.
