So why do we even bother with probation and parole? It is obviously expensive, sometimes ineffective in preventing crime, and cumbersome. Explain some of your thoughts on this. If you have a better system in mind, briefly explain it. Be professional, open-minded, and courteous. The goal is not to bash the American judicial system, but to pose the hard questions and to set the stage for learning more about probation and parole through the rest of the course.

The American public believes that 75% of sex offenders will reoffend, when research actually shows a rate of 14-25% of recidivism over a 15-year period. 1. Explain why you think it is that the American public estimates this to be so high. 2. Discuss your position regarding the sex offender registry and whether or not sex offenders should be required by law to register if they have already paid their debt to society by serving a sentence.
