Braze Weld Joint Design
An engineering change requires a redesign of a braze welded lap joint on a subassembly at your company. Your boss has assigned you to determine the lap distance specifications to assure needed strength.
The detail below indicates the dimensions of the components used to construct the lap joint. The formula given may be used to determine the lap distance.
$L = \frac{S_t t F}{S_s}$
Where
L = lap distance
$S_t$ = tensile strength of weakest (tensile) member
t = thickness of weakness member
F = safety factor
$S_s$ = shear strength of brazing alloy (use 60% of tensile strength)
Safety factor = 3
Filler metal = RbCuZn-A
Tensile strength = 40 ksi
Base metal = AISI 1018
AISI 1040
