Greetings.
00:01
Today we have a word problem that has to do with percentages off.
00:05
Alright, here's our question.
00:07
Lucky you.
00:07
You went to couponcaven .com and found a 25 % off coupon to your significant other's favorite store.
00:13
Armed with that coupon, you went to the store only to find a store -wide sale offering 20 % off everything in the store.
00:20
In addition, your credit card has a special offer that allows you to save 10 % if you use your credit card for all purchases that day.
00:27
Using your credit card what will you pay before tax for the $165 gift you found we're going to use the single equivalent discount to calculate how much you would save and then calculate the final price all right so the single equivalent discount what that does is we need to take each of the percentages that we're going to be able to take off and subtract each of those from 100 so because the original price is 100 right so we're going to say 100 my minus 25, so that's going to be 75, and then 100 minus 20 is going to be 80, and then 100 minus 10 is going to be 90.
01:09
Then we need to convert all of these to percentages.
01:13
So we're going to divide everybody by 100, so then this becomes 0 .75, this becomes 0 .80, and this becomes 0 .90.
01:28
Okay, so our next step in calculating a single equivalent discount is to multiply all of these together.
01:35
When we do that, we get 0 .54.
01:39
And so that is our single equivalent discount, our sed.
01:44
We're effectively going to say 54 % today...
