Our network of professors, PhDs, high school teachers, and TAs produces thousands of STEM video lessons daily. In our Educator Spotlight series, we’re providing an opportunity for you to get to know the incredible educators who make our mission, to democratize STEM education, possible.
- What sets Numerade apart from other tutoring services for educators?
Knowing that I could stop working as soon as I needed a break is beneficial. There are no required face-to-face interactions, this allowed me the chance to work whenever I’m able to. I also don’t experience burnout because my schedule is set by me. Lastly, I can make as much content as I desire.
- How has Numerade refined or improved your teaching ability?
The number one thing has been seeing the types of questions other teachers present. There are topics I didn’t know overlapped as well as content I didn’t realize belonged in certain units. In my teaching situation, I’m the only one teaching some subjects and I don’t always have an opportunity to ask other teachers how they would approach a topic/unit. Seeing questions from other professors has changed the connections I make in the classroom.
- How has creating content on Numerade improved your overall preferred STEM subject knowledge?
I would reiterate what I said in question 2. Additionally, making thousands of videos would make anyone better at their subject knowledge. How could you dedicate so much time and energy and not come out more prepared in your subject knowledge?
- How could educators use Numerade for professional development?
Any extra time you spend honing your craft should count as professional development. I’d rather spend extra time creating math content than sit in a meeting.
- What other unexpected benefits have you gained from being an educator on Numerade?
Another unexpected benefit has been my fluency in the subject. Numerade has helped me master a few topics because of the number of questions. I can quickly decipher when to perform certain procedures and I try to give a clear and concise explanation when I may have provided longer explanations in the past.
- It was so cool to hear how you used the additional funds from Numerade to ensure each of your students had access to a graphing calculator! Have your students been enjoying them?
With every school year, my students are reluctant to touch the technology. I have the only classroom with a full set of graphing calculators. It takes about a month before students become comfortable with them; however, they seem to be better prepared for high-stakes exams because of the calculators. Also, technology isn’t going away, and being able to adapt to unfamiliar technology will pay dividends for these students in the future.
