You made it. Finals are over, winter break is here and the relief is palpable. For the next few weeks, it’s time to unwind, reset and recharge in your well-deserved downtime. Here are 6 ways to have a healthy, happy and supremely relaxing winter break so you can come back ready to take on the world – and spring semester.
Get plenty of sleep
This one is a no-brainer, and I’m sure you don’t need us to tell you to catch up on sleep after all those long nights cramming for finals and completing projects, but we will anyway. A good night’s sleep – or a month of them – can go a long way toward helping you prepare for the upcoming semester, so make sure you’re getting enough rest over winter break.
Take a break from technology
This one is a harder sell, but it can be surprisingly rejuvenating to take a break from technology in your downtime, even if that just means checking Instagram slightly fewer times per hour. Unplugging from social media and cutting back on screen time lets us recharge our batteries and focus on some of the IRL things we may have been missing out on while glued to our laptops during finals. Like what, you ask? Well…
Connect with friends and family
Now that you have some free time, it’s a great opportunity to catch up with the important people in your life. Wrap presents, drink hot cocoa and do a puzzle with the fam, celebrate New Year’s Eve with the hometown crew, go ice skating with that special someone: Our support networks and loved ones are essential to success in all our endeavors, including school, and now is the time to reconnect with the people we care about and reaffirm those vitally important relationships.
Get some exercise
We’re not suggesting you become an Olympic triathlete over winter break, although we’d be very impressed if you did, but even occasional exercise can have a huge impact on our physical and mental wellbeing. If you’re somewhere cold and snowy, you could go skiing, skating or snowshoeing, and if you’re not, you could do literally anything else (must be nice). Exercise is a great way to center yourself after a month of finals-induced stress, and it’ll have you feeling ready to take on the world by the time spring semester starts.
Do something creative
Now that you have some mental bandwidth for things that aren’t calc, bio or computer science, it’s a good opportunity to exercise some different parts of your brain with creative activities. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a beginner, try a creative outlet this winter break. Who knows, you might even discover a new passion and lifelong hobby!
Learn something new
You know we had to throw this one in. While relaxing is definitely the top priority over winter break, it’s also worth keeping yourself sharp with occasional brain usage.
