Problem 1

Think back to when you have been in a dispute with your parents over issues of spending money, curfew, use of the car, your choice of friends, and so forth. In what ways have you tried to understand their point of view? How might you apply the concept of preparatory empathy before embarking on what might be a very tense encounter with your parents or in the future with a client who presents a very troubled picture of perhaps child or spousal abuse?

Problem 2

When you think about a class that you are now taking (either this one or another) as a form of human service encounter, with the student as a client and the instructor as the worker, try to visualize the contract between the parties. What are the rules of the road in that class, both the formal ones and the informal ones? How clear are the expectations the students have of the instructor and those the instructor has of each of the students? How might this contract be made clearer or more realistic, if you think it needs to be changed?

Problem 3

What kind of health care arrangements do you and your family have right now? What kind of comments have you heard your parents make about their coverage situation? Would you be willing to pay higher taxes if it meant that every citizen would be given health insurance through the government (just as Medicare now covers most people over age 65)? What are the upsides and downsides of a government-sponsored, universal health care program as opposed to the current free-market approach, where coverage depends on your employer or your ability to buy a private plan?

Problem 4

The new Health Reform bill requires that all citizens have a health care program. Some argue that this is a violation of a person's rights, while others assert that if a person does not have health care insurance other citizens will, in the long run, have to pick up his or her tab for medical services. What do you think of this very controversial requirement?
