Historians have been deeply divided over the reasons why Africans became slaves and Europeans were servants. One school of thought focuses on an inherent racism within English society that differentiated Africans from Europeans and justified the enslavement of the former. Another school argues that decisions were made according to the price and availability of unfree laborers. Which makes the most sense?
