Reading Strategies
To what opportunity is the author responding?
Who is the audience for his response? In other words, what was the work's original purpose? What is his main point? What does the author want you to do with the information?
Do you find the author a trustworthy authority on this topic? How does he establish his credibility (ethos)? What does the author know about these issues?
How does the author employ logic and reason (logos) to structure his essay? What evidence does the author use to support his point? Do you find his reasons convincing? Does he provide sufficient evidence to persuade you? What are the overall strengths and weaknesses of the essay Prizant presents?
Does the author make an authentic emotional connection (pathos) with his audience?
How effective is his choice of a mix of genres-profile, argument, evaluation-and the use of print to deliver his message? How might he use other media to effectively deliver his message?
