Applied Optimization - Example 1

In applied mathematics, optimization is the process of finding the maximum or minimum value of a function. The function could be a cost function, or a function that has some other kind of objective, but the process of finding the maximum or minimum of a function is the same. Optimization is a very general problem-solving technique, whose applications include mathematical programming, operations research, computer science, statistics, and many engineering fields. Optimization has been called the "central problem in engineering", because it can be applied to so many different problems, both in pure and applied sciences. Optimization is also a core area in economics.
