Introduction to organic chemistry

The course starts with the introduction of organic compounds followed by shapes of organic compounds and their structural representation including complete, bond-line, condensed and three-dimensional representation. It further discusses the classification of organic compounds as open chain, closed chain including aromatic compounds. The course also discusses the functional groups. It then goes on to explain the IUPAC naming of organic compounds such as alkanes, organic compounds containing functional groups, substituted benzene compounds. The course also discusses the types of isomerism like structural isomerism and stereoisomerism. It then explains the different concepts in organic reaction mechanisms like nucleophile, electrophile, inductive effect, resonance effect, electromeric effect and hyperconjugation. The course also covers the different purification methods of organic compounds such as sublimation, crystallization, distillation, differential extraction and chromatography.
