Definition Of Acids And Bases - Example 2

An acid is a chemical compound capable of donating a hydron (proton) to another compound (an acid "ion"izer). Acids can also act as proton acceptors. Acids strongly ionize (donate protons) in water. Pure water is neutral, being neither an acid nor a base, but in fact dissolves a small amount of acid in it. Acids have a sour taste, can turn blue litmus red, and react with bases and certain metals (like calcium) to form salts. Acids react with bases and certain metals (like calcium) to form salts. Acid-base reactions are the most important reactions in chemistry. Acids are proton donors. Bases are proton acceptors.
