The SAT Reasoning Test, formerly known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Scholastic Assessment Test, is a standardized test that assesses a student's verbal reasoning, critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills. It was first introduced in 1926 by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States as a competitor to the College Board's Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I), which was introduced in order to help universities and scholarship programs to evaluate applicants more fairly. The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States.
