Assignment: Gun Violence and what can be done about it?
Homecoming is an event that we have every year around this time. It's a time where we all can
come together to celebrate our sweet Grambling State and have some good fun even with our
past students. It is sad that just about every time a big event is held on campus especially when
others are allowed to enter and partake, we end up with one of our own loosing their life to yet
another senseless act of violence. Following the gun violence which took place over the
homecoming weekend, I believe that it could have all been avoided with a lot more measures of
security out into place. I understand that it is an open campus and we cannot really prevent
persons from coming in. however, we can have officers at just about every checkpoint and place
of entry to search each vehicle or person. If they are found with weapons then it should be
confiscated at least till they are ready to leave. This incident was really sad and I can't imagine
my mom waking up the next day to news of my death especially as I am far away from home.
What hurts the most is that it was a Black man who did it to another Black man. Why are we still
fighting against each other? After all what our ancestors go through and what we are still going
through with the system, why do the same thing to our own people?
In addition, I believe that persons should be better educated about gun violence. Our young
people need to be engaged in some sort of training or program to help them control their anger.
Counseling sessions should be available at all times and it should be expressed each and every
time so that the youths know its available. Most times we find that the reasons for such violence
is because our young people are already going through so much that in the het of a moment they
cannot control themselves. A lot needs to be taken into consideration when the topic of gun
violence arises. How can we stop it? We say that there is not much which can be done to curb
such issue as many persons have access to guns. However, if the persons in higher authority
come together alongside the police department to discuss ways to curb such violence or any
violence for that matter of fact on our campus I believe that should at least be a start.
