What Is Performance Appraisal?
A performance appraisal is also referred to as performance evaluation, performance review or employee appraisal. All companies use performance appraisals to discover which employees have contributed the most to the company's growth, review progress, and reward high-achieving workers.
Performance appraisal and review is the formal, systematic assessment of how well employees are performing their jobs in relation to established standards. It is also the dialogue about that assessment with employees. Systematic, formal appraisal of an individual is likely to occur at certain intervals throughout that person's history of employment. For example, a person's performance maybe appraised during the first few days on the job, at the end of six months and each six months thereafter to review the person's salary and to determine any needs for improvement, and at the end of a few years to assess suitability for promotion. Informal appraisals on the other hand, tend to take place on an ongoing basis within the organization as supervisors evaluate their subordinates' work and as subordinates appraise each other and their supervisors on a daily basis.
Performance appraisals are periodic, ongoing assessments of an employee's job performance. Businesses often use performance appraisals to provide employees with feedback on their work and to justify decisions like salary increases, bonuses and, in some cases, terminations. Although performance appraisals can be performed at any point in time, many companies conduct assessments on a quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis. It is the process of gathering, recording and critically analyzing information about the relative importance of employees to the organization.
Performance appraisal is study of present achievements and failures, personal strengths and weaknesses, and suitability for incentives, rewards and recognition, increased pay scale, promotion or further training. A performance appraisal is known by other terms like employee appraisal, performance review. It is a method by which the job performance of an employee is measured in terms of quality, quantity, cost, behavior and time. It is conducted by self, peers, seniors and juniors. But generally in formal method it is conducted by the immediate manager or supervisor under whom the person is directly working.
A performance appraisal is also a part of measuring, comparing, finding, guiding, correcting and managing career development of the employees. It is the process of gathering, recording and critically analyzing information about the relative importance of employees to the organization.
