Consent and Medical Procedures

Day 7 10.23.18 Consent Giving permission Means a decision is voluntary Important because in medicine you need to give consent to certain procedures or give consent for the sharing of your medical records When are patients unable to give consent? o If they're unconscious o If they're under the influence (drugs, alcohol, etc.) Implied consent Sometimes verbal consent is adequate in an emergency Adequacy of consent o A busy physician might just say big terminologies but if the patient doesn't understand, then it isn't consent o When it comes to language barriers, it's important to get a translator A physician can't delegate their responsibilities to another person, especially when it comes to explaining procedures, treatments and medications What do you when someone refuses consent? o Let them know what would happen if they don't accept the procedure Try and convince them with another physician If they still don't want it, make them sign a form saying that they're refusing the procedure
