WORLD CULTURES IV NOTES PART 2 Reconstruction Amendments Introduction : When the amendments were added, it was the first time in 60 yrs : The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments all deal with slavery but the 14th deals with more issues as well such as citizenship From the Constitution (Places in the Constitution that indirectly mention slavery) . Article 1 o Section 1 - About representation and taxation - Free persons are counted as 1, indentured servants/excluding Indians aren't taxed, 3/5s other persons o Section 9 - The migration/importations of "such Persons" (slaves) won't be prohibited until 1808 Until then, a tax/duty can be imposed on it but not exceeding $10 per person Article 4 Section 2 o The citizens of each state are granted the privileges/immunities of citizens in other states o Anybody who is the service of labor/service who escapes without being discharged must be delivered to the respective party The Amendments Amendment 13 o Section 1: Abolition of slaves; involuntary servitude is only for punishment of crime o Section 2: Congress as the power to enforce this Amendment 14 o Section 1 Everybody born/naturalized in the US are citizens of the US and of the state where they live No state can pass laws that takes away the privileges/immunities of citizens State not allowed to deprive a person of life, liberty, or property o Section 2 Representatives will be apportioned to the States according to whole numbers except Indians not taxed (got rid of 3/5s clause) - Every male of 21 years of age can vote and you can't take that away (cough cough women) o Section 3 - No one that works in an office of the Fed govt. can engaged in insurrection/rebellion or aid/comfort to enemies of a rebellion But 2/3s vote of both houses of Congress can remove this disability though o Section 4 confirmed the legitimacy of all public debt appropriated by the Congress. It also confirmed that neither the United States nor any state would pay for the loss of slaves or debts that had been incurred by the Confederacy. (sorry was kind of confused so this is what Wikipedia says) o Section 5: Congress has the power to enforce this amendment Amendment 15 o Section 1: Citizen's right to vote can't be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude (cough cough gender) Section 2: Congress has the power to enforce this amendment 2 W.E.B. Du Bois-"Of the Dawn of Freedom Introduction Du Bois was an American sociologist and was the most important black protest leader in the US during the 1st half of the 20th cent He took part in creating the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 Later in life identified with communist causes He graduated from Fisk Univ. (black institution at Nashville) in 1888 Received Ph.D. from Harvard in 1895 (history) Even though his Ph.D. was in history, he was broadly trained in the social sciences During this time, sociologists
