Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? A healthy habits that I have is that I wake up early and get some of my daily cleaning chores done. I grew up on a cow farm so the earlier we got up and got started especially in Texas the earlier we got done. This was super important in the summer time because of how hot it could get during the day. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and val- ues. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? I chose Loma Linda, California. The social science that I identified first in the area is the be- liefs and values. In the insert, you learn the town is run by Seventh-Day Adventists and they believe in clean eating, no alcohol, no smoking, and daily exercise. This aligns with the be- liefs and values social science role. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environ- ment. An example of the environment influencing the population is the religious environment that is within the town. The church has a huge impact on the town and has provided major restric- tions for the towns population. The population gets effected by this because it is hard for them to socialize outside of the church and it's strict rules. The town's populations participates in lots of farmer's markets and runs in the town to promote their clean and healthy lifestyles. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life. I think in my day-to-day lifestyle that affects me the most is that I am a working mom in the south. The social norm here is that the woman stays at home and "takes care of the house- hold." People are quite blown away that I actually want to work and have a career. Another social science that affects me daily is the social roles we take. I am definitely an observer and an enforcer when it comes to the social roles. I love the career that I am in and I want one day to move up into management. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you
