2-3 Final Project Milestone One: Proposed Music Julie Beck MUS-223 Southern New Hampshire University Dr. Foust 3/13/2022 2 Proposed Work The proposed musical piece I have chosen from Fantasia for my final project is "Sorcerer's Apprentice " by the French composer Paul Dukas. The piece was a symphonic poem completed in 1897. Dukas based The Sorcerer 's Apprentice on the poem Der Zauberlehrling that was written 100 years earlier by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Dukas work was part of the Romantic Period. Music in this period was based on stories, poems, and art piece. It was also considered programme music, which is intended to paint pictures and evoke extra-musical ideas in the listener's mind based on a specific narrative. I chose this piece because I love the story it paints about an old wizard and the apprentice (Mickey Mouse) he leaves to clean up. You get a magical, mysterious feeling from the very beginning of the melody to the very end. You can feel all the emotions the apprentice goes through as you watch the movie or just listen to the music. You feel all the emotions that the apprentice experiences throughout the piece and that is story telling with music Counts, J. (2021, September 22). DUKAS: The Sorcerer 's Apprentice.
