Appreciation and History of Music

First, introduce yourself to the class. Include your major and anything you would like to share about yourself. Then address the prompt below. The ancient Greeks believed in the "doctrine of ethos." In summary, this doctrine states that music can a ect your body. mind, and soul. It can a ect your feelings. For instance, have you ever been sad and music made you feel better? Music can explain your response. When responding to your peers, you may notice you had a di erent reaction to the music than they did. Explain how your reaction and/or feelings are di erent and what musical elements may have created those di erences. How do di erent musical elements create di erent feelings? My Post: Hello Everyone, My name is Alison Hill, and I am majoring in Game Art & Development. This is my senior year, and then I can nally graduate! The "doctrine of ethos" shows us just how important music is to our society since way back when. I believe music can make us feel and invokes certain reac ons out of us. One example are dancers doing improv. It is like they feel the music and translate it with their body. And as viewers, we can really connect with what the dancer is expressing. Another thing that comes to mind are movie soundtracks and background music. If movies didn't have the background music, it would be a completely di erent movie. The instrumentals can build suspense, scare you, make you feel happy, or even sad. Something that have experienced a lot is associa on and nostalgia with music. For example, the song that was playing in the car when my dad and I were on a road trip and decided to sing it at full volume in the middle of the night. The lyrics aren't especially meaningful to me, but the moment with the song was. So, when I hear it, it makes me feel something. And lastly, to answer the ques on in the prompt about whether music has made me feel be er when I am sad...yes. It has also made me feel worse lol. If I am already sad and just want to get a good cry and feel validated...put on some really sad music and that will do it. You will feel sad for quite a while. Don't recommend though lol, always be er to feel good, so put on that happy music instead! Response: Hello Tori, These are some great examples as to how music can a ect our mood or feelings! We both took a di erent approach but meet in the middle because we both agree with the Doctrine of Ethos. I went more with the background music in movies, nostalgia associated with music, and how sad music makes me feel. We did both talk about how sad music can put us deeper into our feelings! I like the approach you took by talking about how music can help you focus. I didn't
