REPORT Ethics is the study and practice of decisions about what is good or right. According to Hill, "Ethics guides us when we are wondering what we should be doing in a particular situation" (Hill, 2023). Laws are enforceable rules and regulations of conduct that govern the actions of individuals in a particular country or community. In other words, ethics is the term used to describe a set of moral principles that guide the conduct of an individual or a group. It focuses on the concept of right and wrong and acts as a guide for decision-making, often guided by cultural, societal, or personal perspectives. On the other hand, Law is a set of rules and regulations that a governing authority establishes and enforces to maintain social order and justice. Laws have a formal, tangible, and enforceable structure compared to ethics. The goal of ethics and law is to encourage just behavior, but they fundamentally differ in their enforcement. Legal consequences can arise when laws, which are uniform and binding rules, are broken. There is no judicial enforcement or punishment for unprincipled behavior in ethics, which is largely voluntary and subjective, with different interpretations. Despite being distinct, laws can be influenced by ethical values that are prevalent in a society. It is equally important to acknowledge that not all things that are legally right may also be ethically right, and vice versa. While the law sets the minimum standard of behavior, ethics aims to transcend it by appealing to one's conscience. (Hill, 2023). A self-regulating business model called corporate social responsibility (CSR) assists a company in being socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. The purpose of a
corporation is to act in a way that enhances society and the environment, rather than detracts from it. Many tactics can be employed, such as giving a portion of profits to charity and adopting greener operations practices. Ethical business practices and corporate social responsibility are intertwined, as they both involve a company taking actions that benefit society. When it comes to dealings with the community, customers, employees, and other stakeholders, a company must abide by the standards and principles of ethical business practices. The aim is to ensure fair treatment, promote diversity, uphold honesty, and respect rights (Hill, 2023). Corporate Social Responsibility and ethics have a reciprocal relationship, where Corporate Social Responsibility implements ethical considerations. When a company operates ethically, it naturally tends to fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility, as it considers the wider impact it has on the community and strives to make it positive. Ethical conduct is encouraged by the company's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, as it is constantly accountable to the public and its stakeholders. This cycle of mutual reinforcement helps to build a company's reputation, strengthens relationships with stakeholders, and ultimately drives long-term success. (Hill, 2023).
