Job Evaluation Techniques and Recommendations

4-2 Short Paper: Job Evaluation at Smith Upholstery Tara Schirmer · What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the simple ranking, alternate ranking, and point method job evaluation techniques? The main advantage of the Simple Ranking System is that it is very inexpensive to implement and maintain. It is only effective when there are a few jobs that need to be evaluated. The Alternate Ranking System is easy and very inexpensive to implement. If it is implemented correctly, it can bring bias and errors to a minimum, but keep in mind that it is a challenge for employees to understand and even more of a challenge to explain to the employees. The Point Method is the most used evaluation system when it comes to evaluating employees job performance. It consists of comparing the employee's skills, effort and value that that person brings to the company. It is simple and easy to implement, and it can be used to evaluate all employees no matter the job title or type of work they perform. This is the preferred method for evaluations. · What problems may occur by following Robert's approach? Accuracy with his evaluations using this specific ranking system (The Simple Ranking). That becomes a problem because he may state that employee "A" is doing his/her job to company standards when there needs to be training or a possible disciplinary action. Being that Marco just started with the company, he needs to take some time to understand and get to know the employees and their jobs so that he can accurately complete evaluations and not make the employees feel undervalued and keep morale high. . What do you recommend Marco do first? Why? Being that Marco is a recent graduate and has not held a position in the HR field, or as an HR Manager, Marco needs to research what types or performance evaluations there are, there differences, how to accurately administer one, and which one may be a better fit for him and the employees he helps oversee. Talk to the employees one on one while the employee is performing the task. Ask questions and understand the process, ask if there is a training manual on how to do that specific job, do that job. One of the options that I recommend is to seek out someone that you know, an old professor, friend, someone who is experienced in the field of Human Resources and get their recommendations and guidance. There is a huge network of professionals that lean on one another, the world of Human Resources is challenging and always changing. Marco may have to follow orders from Robert that he disagrees with, but if Marco looks at the bigger picture, he can still get all the jobs evaluated correctly, even if the ranking system isn't the one he agrees with. If Marco can execute this correctly and accurately, there could be pay increases for the employees as well as him.
