Module 4 Journal Upon completing the Comfort in Social Situations Worksheet my results have surprised me in some areas and not so much in others. I have a truly diverse family with different races, disabilities, sizes, genders but not so much sexuality. I am very conscious of race and have always tried my best to be respectful and mindful of my situations. There are many different situations where I have seen bias or stereotypes when it comes to race, especially within my family. My own mother has had a disability since I was a little girl, and my nephew is autistic. So, disabilities of all kinds do not make me uncomfortable if anything I know how to communicate with many different people. I have interned at a large doctor's office with all geriatric patients, so age is another diversity that I have no issues with. What surprised me the most was the weight and sexuality section that I scored high on. When I was growing up sexuality was either male or female and being transgender was not common. If you were gay, it just meant you liked the opposite sex and there was no real talk of LBGT + community. I would say my family status and school attributed to this implicit bias. Getting older today, the many different forms of sexuality are quite common and accepted more than in the past. I still struggle with how to address someone according to their gender and it is an automatic response to just say what they look like. I never want to offend anyone so I know working in the criminal justice field I will need to be more aware and conscious of this. One way I practice addressing someone the right way is to simply not assume anything and never put a label unless they specifically tell me. I scored high because I am uncomfortable when it is pointed out about someone else's weight. I personally know how it feels to be made fun of when it comes to that. I have bigger family members and feel bad when they cannot do what I can or when I see someone staring in public. This would be an implicit bias that I am subconsciously worried about. I understand that someone's weight does not stop them from doing the thing I can and even might be better than me.
