The ever increasing enhancement and ever changing use of technology into the
everyday construct of the world and policing is increasing in the criminal justice systems
a whole. Dating back as far as the mid 1800s, Police departments have used technology
to help reduce crime all over the world (Utecht, 2019p. 30). Its use began with the
documentation and use of cameras to document crime scenes to today's use of facial
identification license plate readers and various biometric and unheard of uses. Its uses
have transformed our system into a system some say wouldn't know how to work with
out it today. It is that common place and has drastically impacted our criminal justice
system and the laws around them.
As technology has expanded some have really questioned if privacy rights and whether
our founding fathers really envisioned this policing style. Its required and requiring
consistent rules and laws on the criminal justice system as well as jurisdictional issues on
the Internet as crimes can be committed to you and victims and suspects are half a world
away in different countries. This societal trend of technology has expanded throughout
the criminal justice world and is relevant as its became an everyday staple and an ever
increasing place to solve crimes as well as where crimes are committed
Cultural and political factors that contribute to the trend are the public's desire for
more advanced and ease of use of technology social media platforms and the ever
willingness to wave there privacy rights and share what was before thought as strictly
private data. Additionally the desire for this expansion and creation of almost parallel
realities such as there every day persona and that of there web presence creating an even
harder time for law enforcement to track and figure out true suspects and those vulnerable
to victimization. Cultural mediums such as television and movies help motivate
People to invent technologies, which were never thought to exist before as well as expand
on their uses to ways they may not have been designed. Unlike previous generations
almost everything has the ability to be filmed and broadcasted at the drop of a hat as well
as you can guarantee almost every person is carrying some sort of recording device.
Cyber crime has forced criminal justice professionals and departments to learn and
expand its presence into the black-markets and dark web and cyber world. A world that
lives in anonymity and for many feel free of repercussions. Finding these keys into this
world is essential to stay relevant and keep society safe.
The increase in technology has affected all aspects of the criminal justice system.
Police have expanded their technology and now use everything from social media to seek
public's help to biometric databases license plate readers' ext. to detect and deter criminal
behavior. Police now are more accountable than ever with their every move able to be
