Cyberlaw and Ethics for Small Businesses

Running Head: MILESTONE ONE IT-412: Cyberlaw and Ethics Milestone One Christopher Gouchenouer Alicia L. Peltier Southern New Hampshire University 7/21/2019 MILESTONE ONE ABC Healthcare is a small business with roughly 50 employees. The company utilizes a simple network that is commonly referred to as a Star network. A star network is a proper network for small businesses in that there isn't a large amount of people using it at the same time. A star network is set up to use a single internet source coming into the business that will be split by a router/switch to allow access to information on the businesses server from other systems and access points. The star setup is very useful and easily maintained by a business that is just staring its operation. There is also a wireless access point that allows employees to use wireless devices while at work. This same wireless access point allows the public to also connect to the network while they are at the business. There were multiple vendors involved with the initial setup of the network and all default credentials were left in place for accessing the software that had been installed. ABC Healthcare had implemented a single server for all records to be stored that is accessible through the network's internal connections, the router/switch connections and the wireless access point. The internal connections used for accessing the information are used by the bookkeeping staff, health records staff as well as the HR management staff. The router/switch is contained on-site that has a wireless access point attached allowing the staff, as well as the public, access to the network from a wireless device. There are personal computers currently being used by the staff for accessing the network in which they are using for personal use for checking emails and browsing the internet for non-work-related purposes. The last item that is used in this network is a network copier/printer. MILESTONE ONE The layout of the office is setup with cubicles that are back to back in an open floor plan allowing for employees to easily access each other if needed. All records are kept in one central location that is accessible to all administration employees within the office. The internal security system has been implemented with a hidden camera system that monitors the employees throughout the office without the employee's knowledge. As a business that is involved with the keeping of healthcare records, ABC Healthcare must operate within the laws that fall under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This law is used to safeguard and protect health information when it is at rest as well as in transit. It also States that "appropriate safeguards are implemented to protect the privacy of Personal Health Information. It also sets limits and conditions on the use and disclosure of that information without patient authorization" (HIPAA Compliance Checklist, n.d). This law is used to combat fraudulent claims within the healthcare industry and protect the privacy and/or security of the private personal
