Over the years, healthcare information technology has made many drastic changes, for
the good of healthcare and patients. According to Brooks (2015), HIM has been around since
1928 when the American College of Surgeons wanted to improve the standards of patient
records being created (pg. 1). Healthcare professionals had soon realized documenting patient
care benefited the patient as well as providers (Brooks, 2015). When documenting patient
information began, doctors would document on paper, which lasted until the roughly the 70s
and then with the advancement in technology, they were able to begin using computers to
document. During the 80's healthcare software development took a huge, successful stride in
implementing new programs. Specifically, the most noted program developed was the MPI,
Master Patient Index, which was a database used across a whole organization that included all
patient information. This is something that is still a success in today's technology (Brooks,
2015). According to Alanazi et al. (2020), "The healthcare outcomes of EHR/EMR are mainly
attributed to the systems enormous benefits, including the elimination of redundant paper-
based processes, elimination of time consuming procedures in recording and retrieving patient
data, easy access to patient information, and improved communication (pg. 1)
From my past experiences, and knowledge I do believe that healthcare technologies
are used for the same purpose. I find that the main goal throughout organizations, hospitals.
doctors offices, etc. is that they want to make things easier, and more convenient, for patients
and staff. EMR, electronic prescriptions, and telehealth services all serve the main purpose for
convenience. From the start of my healthcare career, until now, I have seen much
advancement with positive results throughout. Especially once COVID hit, patients were
extremely pleased with the telehealth services and were happy to know that they can get the
care they needed from their own home.

EMR, electronic prescriptions, and telehealth services can definitely be used across
different departments. The different departments in hospital all share one system. So, different
employees are able to find out patient information at the time it gets implemented into the
system. Another thing that is beneficial is when hospitals are also affiliated with medical
office buildings. From my experience at Danbury Infectious Disease, we shared the same
system as Danbury Hospital. This was extremely helpful for us as staff because we were able
to find out if our patients had been admitted into the hospital, what the status was of a surgery.
their allergies, insurance information, and much more. I also like the idea of electronic
prescriptions. I think that has made prescribing medications a lot easier for the physicians and
patients. From the medical office side, we were able to see when the physicians had signed off
on the medications, and when they were filled from the pharmacy. Having the electronic
system has made it easier to backtrack
