Enhancing Postpartum Care for Mothers and Babies

Olivia Bushey Journal One 01/13/2024 Topic The topic I choose would be to incorporate better postpartum care visits for mom and baby to ensure that both are thriving and doing well. This would involve a series of checkups after the baby is born that would allow mothers to be checked physically and mentally to ensure they are doing okay and feeling heard. Many new postpartum mothers have a high risk of developing serious infections or illnesses after birth. Having these checkups would help lower mortality rates among postpartum mothers and decrease the number of women who go undiagnosed and suffer from postpartum depression. Having doctors and nurses specifically for post-partum will change the way as mothers will be dealing with providers who specialize in this field and will give the best care not only to moms but also to babies if needed. Organization The organization that would be positively impacted by this is MUSC of South Carolina. MUSC stands for medical university of South Carolina. MUSC opened in 1824 as a college that trained new upcoming Phyicians. Since then, MUSC has opened many learning medical facilities across South Carolina that allows thousands of students to learn first hand. There are 26,000 facility members throughout all the medical facilities which includes physicians, students, scientists, specialty providers and more. MUSC would be greatly impacted from this as they are in a high populated area and have many expecting mothers that could benefit from outstanding postpartum care. Select I selected this issue because I recently went through my own post-partum journey and realized how many cracks are in the systems and how many new moms are failed. After I had my son the only time someone would ask if I was okay or how I was doing was at my sons' appointments. Even though I was lucky enough to not have struggled with PPD I know many friends who have. Postpartum is such a raw, vulnerable time that whether you are a new mom or a mom to five there should be a requirement to go to weekly checkups to ensure that they are doing okay. Having trained ready staff will only help mothers feel more welcome and trusting of who they are seeing and also in getting the care they need. Too many moms who struggle either health wise or mentally go unnoticed and it's time that we truly take care of them and help them through whatever they are going through. Future milestones Based on the future milestones of this project I can complete my project using this topic. Postpartum is a huge topic and I have been able to find lots of research and ways to positively impact postpartum mothers. I think this is a good topic as it is an issue happening all over the United States and even though I am doing it on MUSC many other hospitals could benefit from this as well.
